Hungary’s Prime Minister Péter Magyar highlighted the significant focus on Ukraine’s EU membership bid, sanctions, and the broader economic issues facing the European Union during discussions at the recent European Council summit. A key outcome from the summit was the unanimous agreement among EU member states on the final declaration regarding Ukraine. However, Magyar noted that a proposal intended to speed up Ukraine’s accession was removed after consultations among the countries involved.

The path to Ukraine’s EU membership continues to be a point of contention within the bloc, with some member states expressing reservations about both the rate of accession and the potential economic repercussions. These discussions underscore the ongoing debate about Ukraine’s future within the European Union and the diverse perspectives among its member countries.

During the summit, Magyar engaged in talks with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, addressing Hungary’s long-standing Article 7 procedure along with broader EU matters. Additionally, he held discussions with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and took part in meetings with leaders from the Visegrád Group, which includes Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

Magyar emphasized the necessity of reinvigorating cooperation within the Visegrád Group, underscoring the importance of collaboration among Central European nations. He confirmed that further regional discussions are planned to take place in Hungary, aiming to strengthen ties and address mutual concerns.

Looking ahead, EU leaders are also set to continue negotiations concerning the bloc’s long-term budget framework for the period of 2028 to 2034, reflecting ongoing efforts to align financial planning with the Union’s strategic priorities and challenges.
