Hungary Rule-of-Law Tech Dispute: FIDESZ MEPs Slam EU Commission’s Inaction

Members of Hungary’s FIDESZ–KDNP group in the European Parliament have expressed concern over what they perceive as the European Commission’s lack of response to significant constitutional and political shifts in Hungary. These developments, according to the Hungarian delegation, threaten the integrity of the country’s democratic institutions.

During a recent joint session of the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László urged the European Commission to clarify its stance on several pressing issues. These include constitutional amendments, limitations on political competition, alterations affecting parliamentary mandates, and challenges to the independence of state institutions.

The Hungarian lawmakers highlighted that while the Commission has previously expressed concerns regarding the rule of law in Hungary, going so far as to withhold EU funds, it has remained silent on these latest developments. They questioned whether these constitutional changes align with the democratic standards upheld by Europe.

The FIDESZ–KDNP delegation insisted that democratic principles must be upheld uniformly across all EU member states, emphasizing the need for an equitable application of such standards. Despite these calls for clarity, representatives from the Commission did not provide detailed answers to the questions raised during the hearing.
