Greek Economy to Surpass Eurozone Growth Despite Inflation Challenges Through 2028

Greece’s economy is projected to grow faster than the eurozone average through 2028, according to the Bank of Greece. Despite challenges such as rising inflation and high energy prices, economic forecasts predict Greece’s gross domestic product (GDP) will increase by 2% in 2026, 1.9% in 2027, and return to 2% growth in 2028. This outlook positions Greece favorably compared to the broader eurozone, which has been experiencing slower growth.

In the second quarter of 2026, Greece’s economy expanded by 1.9% year on year, surpassing the eurozone’s average growth of 1.2%. The main drivers behind Greece’s economic performance are household consumption, investment, and exports. Specifically, private consumption grew by 1.7%, investment surged by 6.1%, and exports of goods and services increased by 2.2% compared to the same quarter the previous year.

However, the rise in imports, which outpaced export growth, has somewhat limited international trade’s contribution to the overall economic expansion. As a result, boosting domestic production and enhancing the country’s export capacity remain crucial priorities for Greece to sustain its economic momentum.

Despite the positive growth forecasts, the Bank of Greece warns that inflation—especially in energy and services—could impact household purchasing power and, consequently, the economic outlook in the coming years. Addressing these inflationary pressures will be essential for maintaining the country’s economic trajectory.
