Germany has reaffirmed its support for Montenegro’s efforts to join the European Union, with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul highlighting the progress made by the Balkan nation in its accession journey. Speaking after a meeting with Montenegrin Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimovic, Wadephul emphasized that Montenegro’s advancements could serve as a model for other Western Balkan countries aspiring to join the EU.
The discussions took place during the Berlin Process summit in Montenegro, where regional cooperation, reconciliation, and reforms were key topics. The meeting also saw the participation of EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, underscoring the EU’s ongoing commitment to the region.
Montenegro has been on the path to EU membership for over two decades and remains one of the Western Balkan nations actively pursuing entry into the bloc. The country aims to finalize its accession process in the near future, aligning with the EU’s standards and criteria for membership.
Wadephul reiterated that countries meeting the EU’s membership requirements and continuing to implement necessary reforms should have a clear pathway to joining the union. This endorsement from Germany adds momentum to Montenegro’s bid, as it continues to work towards achieving full EU membership.
