Greece is ramping up its diplomatic efforts at the United Nations General Assembly, with Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis engaging in high-level discussions on pressing global issues such as regional security, maritime safety, and international cooperation. This increased activity comes as Greece prepares to take on the presidency of the United Nations Security Council in October, a critical period given the current global landscape of armed conflicts and international crises.
During the Assembly, Gerapetritis underscored Greece’s commitment to strengthening regional partnerships, highlighted by trilateral discussions with Cyprus, Jordan, and Egypt. In addition, Greece is actively participating in bilateral meetings with countries including India, Brazil, and Eritrea to address ongoing conflicts and instability in the Middle East.
Greece and India jointly hosted a significant event focusing on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, particularly their applications in shipping and maritime security. This initiative is aligned with Greece’s status as a major global shipping nation and its emphasis on safeguarding maritime routes and ensuring the uninterrupted movement of goods. Gerapetritis further emphasized Greece’s involvement in the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers, showcasing the country’s leadership in maritime matters.
The upcoming Security Council presidency will coincide with significant events, including the process of selecting the next UN Secretary-General.
