Hungary has secured an accord with the European Commission, culminating in the release of billions of euros in previously withheld European Union funds. This breakthrough follows Hungary’s pledge to implement reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, governance, and the management of EU funds. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged the Hungarian government’s initial steps to address these issues, which include bolstering anti-corruption measures, improving oversight mechanisms, and committing to join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Under the terms of this agreement, Hungary is set to receive a substantial influx of funding to bolster infrastructure, energy security, housing, transportation, and business development initiatives. As Hungary continues to roll out further reforms, particularly those concerning higher education and academic governance, additional funds may become available. Prime Minister Péter Magyar confirmed that the total EU funding package amounts to €16.2 billion, describing it as a crucial investment in the nation’s economic growth and development strategy.
This agreement also opens the door for Hungarian students to reengage fully with the Erasmus exchange program starting from the next academic year. This development marks a significant stride in mending relations between Hungary and the European Commission, which have been strained over the years by disputes over governance, judicial reforms, and the allocation of the EU budget.
Despite the progress on financial and educational fronts, migration policy remains a contentious topic in Hungary’s discussions with the EU. Prime Minister Magyar reiterated Hungary’s commitment to securing its borders and maintaining stringent controls on illegal migration, while also upholding its European responsibilities. He underscored the necessity of effective protection for the European Union’s external borders and affirmed that Hungary does not intend to establish migrant camps within its territory.
