UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s state visit to Germany underscores the increasingly robust strategic partnership that has been cultivated between the two nations over decades. This partnership, rooted in political, economic, energy, and cultural collaboration, reflects a significant evolution since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1972. Over the years, the UAE and Germany have significantly expanded their bilateral relations, with trade and investment emerging as crucial areas of cooperation. Last year, bilateral trade reached over Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), firmly positioning the UAE as Germany’s most significant trading partner within the Gulf region.
Approximately 2,000 German companies have established operations in the UAE, including prominent firms such as BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn. The energy sector has seen considerable cooperation, with both countries engaging in initiatives related to renewable energy, climate action, decarbonisation, and energy security. In 2022, a pivotal agreement was signed to bolster energy security and industrial cooperation. This agreement encompasses the supply of UAE liquefied natural gas to Germany and joint projects aimed at advancing clean energy and climate initiatives.
Furthermore, the partnership extends beyond economic and energy sectors, embracing longstanding cooperation in research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. The formal elevation of political ties occurred in 2004 through a strategic partnership agreement, which encompasses various areas including regional security, economic cooperation, and research. This agreement has laid a robust foundation for ongoing collaboration and strategic alignment between the two countries.
Despite facing global political and economic challenges, the relationship between the UAE and Germany remains resilient. There is a continuous expansion of cooperation across strategic sectors, reflecting a mutual commitment to fostering strong bilateral ties. This enduring partnership highlights the ongoing efforts of both nations to enhance collaboration on multiple fronts, ensuring a stable and prosperous future in various domains.
