Greece Leads UN Security Council During Critical Global Crises

by admin477351

Greece has taken on the presidency of the United Nations Security Council as of October 1, marking its second and final term in this role during its 2025–26 tenure as an elected member. Ambassador Aglaia Balta, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, will lead the council, which is set to tackle several pressing international issues throughout the month.

The Security Council’s agenda includes addressing ongoing global conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, the volatile situation in Gaza, tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, the conflict in Sudan, and the security crisis in Haiti. The council’s involvement in Haiti is particularly focused on supporting efforts to manage armed violence ahead of the country’s elections, with the help of an international security force.

Adding to the council’s responsibilities during Greece’s presidency are discussions concerning the selection of the next UN secretary-general. The Security Council plays a crucial role in recommending a candidate to the General Assembly, with the new secretary-general expected to assume office on January 1, 2027.

As Greece presides over these significant matters, the Security Council continues to be a pivotal platform for international diplomacy and conflict resolution. Ambassador Balta’s leadership will be instrumental in navigating the complex issues on the council’s agenda this month.
