by admin477351

Germany is exploring a potential collaboration with Greece on a future submarine construction program, focusing on the modern Type 212 CD submarines. This initiative was discussed during a meeting between German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias, at the Crete Firing Range. Pistorius emphasized Greece’s role as a reliable partner and suggested that the construction could occur in Greece.

The Hellenic Navy’s submarine program is anticipated to be revisited after 2030, with the selection process for new vessels likely commencing following Greece’s national elections in 2027. The discussions also highlighted Greece’s intention to enhance defense ties with Germany through joint military training, improved coordination, hosting German forces, and acquiring military equipment compatible with German systems.

In addition to submarine construction, the ministers addressed collaboration between Greek and German forces in the Kosovo Force (KFOR), pilot training in Kalamata, and Greece’s interest in acquiring IRIS-T SLS air defense missiles. These talks are part of broader efforts by both nations to expand defense cooperation and explore joint military production and training opportunities.

The meeting underscores the ongoing commitment of Greece and Germany to forge stronger defense relationships, reflecting a mutual interest in enhancing military capabilities and operational synergy. The discussions pave the way for future collaborations that may bolster both countries’ defense sectors and contribute to regional security stability.
