These movements offer insight into one’s overall physical condition. Five key movements can help assess various aspects of fitness, including strength, flexibility, mobility, grip, and balance. These exercises require minimal equipment and can be performed safely at home.

The first movement, the deep squat hold, involves standing with feet hip-width apart and lowering into a squat while keeping heels on the ground. Holding this position for up to 60 seconds tests the mobility of the ankles, knees, and hips, as well as lower-body strength and control. If maintaining the squat is challenging or if heels lift off the floor, it may indicate areas needing more attention.

Another critical movement is the dead hang, where individuals use a secure pull-up bar to hold their body off the ground with arms extended for 30 seconds. This exercise evaluates grip strength and upper-body endurance while requiring shoulder stability. Beginners should ensure the bar is secure and avoid this exercise if they have any injuries that might be aggravated.

Assessing one’s ability to get up from the floor without using hands, knees, or forearms highlights a combination of lower-body strength, balance, coordination, and mobility. However, performance can vary depending on age, flexibility, past injuries, and overall fitness, so it shouldn’t be considered a definitive health measure.

The forward fold movement, where individuals bend forward with straight legs to see how far their hands can reach, tests flexibility, particularly in the hamstrings and back muscles. Failing to touch the floor doesn’t necessarily indicate poor health, as flexibility varies among individuals and can be improved with practice. Lastly, the single-leg balance test, which involves standing on one leg and potentially closing the eyes, measures balance and proprioception, providing insight into stability and ankle strength. These exercises collectively offer a simple overview of functional fitness, helping to identify areas for improvement through safe, consistent exercise.
