In a remarkable performance at the U20 World Wrestling Championships held in Bratislava, Hungary’s Greco-Roman wrestlers secured a total of three medals. Leading the charge was László Koppány, who earned a silver medal in the 130kg category. Koppány showcased his wrestling prowess by advancing through a series of tough matches, defeating opponents from China, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Egypt. However, in the final bout, he faced Russia’s formidable Ali Ilyasov, the defending world and European champion, and was defeated 8–0, settling for the silver medal.
In the 77kg category, Zalán Toplak, representing Ferencváros, clinched a bronze medal. After entering the repechage rounds, Toplak demonstrated determination and skill, ultimately securing a spot on the podium with a decisive 10–2 victory over Giorgi Gogelashvili of Georgia. This accomplishment marks Toplak’s first medal at a World Championship, a significant milestone in his wrestling career.
Adding to Hungary’s success, Petro Zsitovoz achieved a bronze medal in the 67kg category. Zsitovoz faced a challenging match against Egypt’s Mohamed Abdelrehim, the U23 world champion. Despite falling behind early in the match, Zsitovoz mounted an impressive comeback to win 11–3, ensuring his place on the podium.
The Greco-Roman wrestling events marked the beginning of the championships, with Hungary fielding eight athletes in this discipline as part of a 22-member delegation. The strong performances of Koppány, Toplak, and Zsitovoz highlighted Hungary’s competitive spirit and determination on the international wrestling stage.
