In an effort to clearly differentiate between human and AI-generated content, Spotify is set to introduce a new labeling system for AI-generated artists starting in September. These AI personas will be marked on both artist profiles and track listings, making it easier for listeners to identify them. Additionally, by default, these AI personas will not appear in personalized recommendations, a strategic move by Spotify to ensure that genuine musicians are not overshadowed by artificial identities.
The initiative aims to safeguard real artists from the potential overshadowing effect of AI-generated content, which has been proliferating at a rapid pace. Spotify has highlighted the significance of this move by revealing that, within a year, it had removed about 75 million spam tracks, underscoring the vast influx of low-quality, artificially created music on streaming platforms.
Spotify’s approach to transparency will allow artists to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated. However, to ensure thoroughness, the company will also deploy human reviewers and AI-powered tools to identify any AI personas that have not been disclosed. This dual approach seeks to maintain the integrity of the platform while supporting the interests of both listeners and genuine artists.
As generative AI continues to gain traction in the music industry, Spotify emphasizes the growing importance of transparency, as listeners increasingly wish to discern whether the artist behind a track is a real person or a digital creation. This new measure by Spotify reflects a broader concern within the music industry to maintain authenticity and support genuine artistic expression amidst the rise of AI technology.
