Greek expatriates in Saudi Arabia are expressing pride in Greece’s military support for the Kingdom, viewing it as a strengthening factor in bilateral relations at a time of regional tensions. Greece has deployed Patriot air defense systems to help protect Saudi Arabia’s critical infrastructure, including energy facilities along the Red Sea coast. This move underscores the growing defense cooperation between the two nations and their shared interest in regional security.
Greek residents like Ioannis Barmpounis and Dimitra Chasapi have voiced that Greece’s contribution to the protection of Saudi Arabia holds personal significance for them, as they maintain strong ties to their homeland while building their lives in the Kingdom. They emphasized the mutual trust, hospitality, and familial respect prevalent in both Greek and Saudi societies.
On October 15, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias visited the Greek Patriot air defense contingent in Yanbu, reaffirming Athens’ commitment to supporting Saudi security. During his visit, Dendias engaged in discussions with Saudi leaders concerning defense cooperation and regional developments, highlighting the importance of the partnership amid concerns over missile and drone threats to strategic infrastructure.
For Greece, this deployment not only provides operational experience in modern air defense but also strengthens its security relationship with Saudi Arabia. The expatriates in Saudi Arabia have expressed a sense of safety despite regional tensions and hope that cooperation between the two countries will extend beyond defense into economic, professional, and cultural fields.
Both Barmpounis and Chasapi expressed optimism that continued collaboration would contribute to regional stability, stronger diplomatic relations, and lasting peace, reflecting a shared aspiration for expanded and multifaceted cooperation between Greece and Saudi Arabia.
