Orbán Warns EU of Legal Action Over Potential Bypass of Hungary’s Veto on Russian Energy Sanctions

by admin477351

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán warned that Hungary will file a lawsuit if the European Commission bypasses Budapest’s veto and imposes sanctions affecting the purchase of Russian oil and gas. Speaking in a radio interview, he said upcoming European decisions will determine whether the Russia–Ukraine conflict expands further into Europe or moves toward de-escalation.
Orbán argued that while U.S.–Russia negotiations could help reduce tensions, some European leaders continue to support prolonging the conflict. He highlighted a key meeting in Belgium, where EU officials are pushing to use frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine. Belgium, which holds a large share of the frozen funds, has expressed concern over potential legal risks if Russia later claims compensation.
The Hungarian prime minister said Belgium’s hesitation shows the uncertainty surrounding the legality of using these assets. He stressed that Hungary will not contribute funds that could draw the country into the conflict.
Orbán also criticized the EU’s planned 2027 ban on Russian energy imports, saying it threatens Hungary’s energy security since the country relies on key transit routes for Russian oil and gas. He accused Brussels of attempting to classify the energy ban as a trade decision rather than a sanction—an approach he says is designed to bypass the requirement for unanimous approval and override Hungary’s veto.
He said Hungary will challenge any such move, warning that the EU is straying from legal norms and abusing its authority.
