Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó emphasized the importance of East–West cooperation at a high-level meeting on the Global Development Initiative, calling it essential for global stability and security. Speaking on the current geopolitical climate, Szijjártó described the world as facing its most tense period since the Cold War, with conflicts pushing toward a return to bloc divisions.
He stressed that Hungary, having experienced significant losses from past divisions, is committed to fostering a world order based on connectivity, mutual respect, and mutual benefits. “Civilized cooperation between East and West will significantly improve the security situation globally, especially in Central Europe,” Szijjártó said.
Highlighting Hungary’s role as a meeting point between East and West, he pointed to the country’s economic neutrality strategy, which provides a stable environment for cooperation. He noted that Hungary is one of only three countries hosting factories for all three premium German car brands, attracting the three largest Chinese electric battery manufacturers as well.
Szijjártó also cited the Paks nuclear power plant expansion, led by a Russian company but involving German and French firms, as a successful example of East–West collaboration. “These partnerships demonstrate the enormous benefits and opportunities that result from civilized East–West cooperation,” he said.
He concluded by reaffirming Hungary’s commitment to promoting East–West cooperation and opposing artificial barriers to international collaboration.
